How much did courageous cost

Paranormal Activity 3 might be able to do the same, but the rest of the new releases and the holdovers are not looking good, so there could be a sizable decline in the year-over-year comparison.

October started out with mixed results and it seems for every bit of good news there was equal and opposite bad news. Real Steel topped expectations, but Ides of March did not. There's still a chance we can catch up, but we are running out of time and can't afford any missteps. This weekend we could see that gap close a little further. There's only one wide release, Real Steel , but it should be bigger than any of last year 's three wide releases.

In fact, there's a tiny, but statistically significant, chance it could earn more during its opening weekend than the combined opening weekends of Life as We Know It , Secretariat , and My Soul to Take. Ides of March won't be as strong, but it should play counter-programming well enough to grab a solid second place.

If the holdovers can hold their own, then the month should start off on a winning note. First the bad news. The industry's slow period in September and October is traditionally a dumping ground for films that the studios would rather forget, but it also presents an opportunity for movies that would otherwise be swamped by the competition at busier times of year.

This weekend provides a perfect example of this phenomenon, with two pictures aimed at church-going families coming out the big winners. September 29th, It's another busy week with three wide releases, plus another opening in just over 1, theaters, which is barely semi-wide. The widest release is What's Your Number? Meanwhile, Dream House had an effective trailer, but there are still no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Courageous should grab a spot in the top ten, but it is not a sure bet. Unfortunately for the year-on-year comparison, none of the new releases look as strong as The Social Network , which opened this weekend last year.

Depth could be the key to victory in the year-over-year comparison. Follow us on. Courageous Synopsis As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners aree confident and focused. Blu-ray Sales: Ides of January January 31st, January is typically a really bad month for the home market, and it is usually even worse for Blu-ray. Ken Bevel opens the film as new cop transferee Nathan Hayes, who saves his infant child from a carjacking incident, that sets the stage that the community he is about to live in, has its own problems with teenage crime, gangs and drugs.

And also having to deal with a growing daughter who sees no wrong in going out on dates, save for the apprehensions he as a father tend to have in suspecting every young man who comes knocking at his door. We're then introduced to corporals Adam Mitchell Alex Kendrick and his partner Shane Fuller Kevin Downes , as well as Nathan's own rookie partner David Ben Davies , all of whom are fathers in their own right, and all facing different challenges in their family lives.

For instance, Adam has to grapple with not spending enough time to connect with his daughter Emily Lauren Etchells and son Dylan Rusty Marin who wants him to run the 5 mile together, save for Adam knowing his own fitness level and refusing to train nor participate. Then there's Javier Martinez Robert Amaya a mutual friend of the cops who is seeking to get out of the poverty circle, and amongst the group has the best of luck in having God answer almost all his prayers.

It helps when almost everyone happen to be God fearing men, but if I may read into the film a little bit more, are men who are clueless in knowing just what to do in bringing up their children the "correct" way. The sheriff of the town pins rising crime statistics squarely on felons not having a proper father figure when growing up, so you'd know just what this film is about - the importance of fatherhood and how fathers become that shining beacon for good behaviour if they know how to instill proper discipline, care, love and respect in the children they are responsible for.

Some may not agree with such a sweeping statement made at least twice in the film, but that's one of the key objectives the film has for its intended audience.

And being a religious film of sorts, there are scenes crafted subtly, and not so subtly, involving how people with crucifixes are first to the scene to render assistance to a crime being committed and to helping with the injured, how a BBQ cookout is alcohol-free, references to the scriptures on being a father, and of course more explicit ones with the reading of the Bible, and cell group like prayers being conducted. As the film wore on, especially once past its crucial turning point of a tragedy that woke everyone up into being committed to signing a commitment, or a covenant of sorts to vow on the proper upbringing of children and looking after the household, such scenes became more pronounced, as with the thanking of the Lord for good fortune smiling their way.

These Resolutions became the centerpiece in which the narrative will revolve around, since the pastor duly warned that each would be tested against what they have signed on paper, leaving the rest of the hour mark to deal with just that. To make it realistic and to avoid the syndrome of everyone being holier than thou, some folks have to take a fall, but it's a fall that's cushioned with redemption toward the end, just like the way the religion preaches about that, and forgiveness.

Some moments did come off as slightly creepy though, especially with Nathan's presentation of a purity ring to his daughter which I thought was a little bit overdone and could have been read in a very different light if taken out of context.

If you're part of the intended audience, then Courageous will be that enjoyable mainstream film that has religious sensitivities, with nary a swear word or vice on display, with the bad guys all getting reached by the long arm of the law. Frankly it's a little bit refreshing watching a film these days that's sans a swear word being uttered. But for those who will roll your eyes at any hint of being preached at, then Courageous would not be your cup of tea though I'd still recommend it if you're up for a film with squeaky clean values, and isn't that shoddy in its production terms.

StevePulaski 5 June One could assume that years of merciless police-work could convert even the brightest soul to a cold-hearted cynic. Thankfully, the policemen in Courageous haven't been converted yet, and a movie focusing on both their impacts at home and at work has been made effectively. It also comes billed with a devout Christian agenda, which managed to even softly side with me, an outspoken Atheist. A good friend of mine mentioned to me how it is funny and a tad disheartening that, in America, movies centered around religion only discuss Christianity and leave many other means of faith unexplored.

I couldn't collectively agree with that, although I do not recall any mainstream movies focusing on a different religion off the top of my head. It's easy to dub the Kendrick Brothers' Courageous as a piece of Christian propaganda, but it is not so easy to have that same person sit through the full two hour ordeal and ask them to prove their point afterwards.

The brothers, Alex actor and director and Stephen producer , respectively, are two men who frequently serve as a pastor at their Sherman Baptist Church in Albany Georgia, and they made the daring move to create "Sherwood Pictures" in , a company devoted to making low-budget Christian films which have gone on to be cherished in the hearts of many, according to many rating's polls.

Now obviously, the heavy use of themes and morals will be more apparent than any artistic or award-winning methods, but that doesn't mean the film can't be enjoyed for what it manages to do.

The story it erects is a difficult one to juggle, but with a fairly sufficient script and respectably flawed characters, it manages to cruise by the stereotype of "just another film made by Bible-thumpers. They are Adam Mitchell Alex Kendrick , father of two who hopes to reconnect more with his teenage son, interested in activities disinterested by him, Nathan Hayes Bevel , also a father of two, who hopes to keep his impatient daughter out of the hands of an older man, Shane Fuller Downes , a man who means well, but sometimes gets caught up on the wrong side of a situation, and the rookie David Thomson Davies who is hiding some rough baggage.

All the men are devoted to their job, yet could improve on their parental status. Their attention is brought forth when tragedy strikes Adam, who loses his youngest, Emily, in a terrible car wreck. Him and his wife are indelibly scarred, yet it is a rugged wake up call for both that they need to value life and take care of each other and their family more. This, of course, also means, remaining on the path of God, and trusting in him and him only as your savior.

All the men sign a pact, or a proclaimed "resolution," meaning that they vow to be there for their children, guiding them and teaching them through the ways of God, helping, holding, and loving their wives, and remaining strong and capable in both their work and their homes. There is an interesting subplot involving a Mexican immigrant named Javier Amaya , a man with a wife and two kids, struggling to get by with necessities, along with paying this month's rent.

It seems serendipitous that his employment to build a shed for Adam's house resulted by a sort of unbelievable misunderstanding, but I've tried so hard to suspend disbelief for so many action pictures that this doesn't seem too crazy. Now one thing to expect from pictures that come equipped with a spiritual background, it is common to find heavy-handedness and you'll definitely find it in Courageous. While the message is a bright one, the film far too often hammers it in your head, conveying the concept of "faith" so oppressively that you figure any form of capturing subtleties was discarded immediately.

This also means the terribly misguided message that the lack of faith makes you a bad person; totally not the case. I mentioned in my review of The Passion of the Christ that despite having a lack of religious beliefs, I, and many other people, see me as a caring and kind human being.

Courageous makes it seems that the less spirituality you possess, the less good you can do for yourself and others. I can collectively assume that being pastors and very secure in their beliefs, that the Kendrick Brothers were more concerned with replicating their thoughts on how the American family should get along and function, rather than try to portray everything in a dimmer, more subtle light, which is perfectly fine by me.

The brothers do possess a talent for believable storytelling, showing humans as flawed and fleshing each one of the character's stories out to where they can be called "deep" and "caring.

It shredded my cynicism early on, and I hope to see the brothers' shedding others as time goes on. Directed by: Alex Kendrick. There was a time when Christian film making was the furthest thing from mainstream but a decade ago with the release of the Left Behind film based on a series of books that sold millions of copies, it ushered in the potential of mainstream, faith based movies.

Courageous just might be the pinnacle of that. The film is incredibly entertaining, engrossing, well acted, good action, and most importantly a loving story about faith and fatherhood. Of course mainstream critics will call it 'preachy' and 'sappy' because Christianity scares them.

If the film was about any other religion they'd be fine with it. The film makers really balanced this film perfectly to get their message across. The film starts with an intense action scene, throws in some good thrills, and a solid dramatic story, tells a message and then ends with a terrific action scene to round out the film. The characters are well written, the acting is solid and the budget is well used and decently high given the independent nature.

Director, writer, and star Alex Kendrick clearly is on to a positive path to mainstreaming the Christian film making. His character, Adam, is just really easy to relate to and very down to earth. He is not a bad guy at all and yet makes some mistakes that every one of us can relate to that he tries desperately to rectify after a tragedy strikes. Ken Bevel is a great leading man in the film. He does some great action scenes in the film and has great chemistry with Kendrick and the other guys in the film.

Ben Davies is the young rookie with the most to learn. He sort of takes a back seat to Kendrick and Bevel but his character is still very important and he does a good job with what he's given. Kevin Downes has such an important character and has the biggest arc but perhaps doesn't feel like the strongest performer in the film.

Maybe its the character or maybe his performance but it doesn't stand out as the best in the film. Robert Amaya plays my personal favorite character, Javier. He is sort of the comedy relief in the film in a lot of ways but he also is the most emotional and faith driven character as well. He truly does a terrific job in the movie. This was also his acting premier which makes it even more impressive that he carries the role flawlessly.

My hope for director and writer Alex Kendrick is that he keeps his faith in making films like this. In watching the extras of the film I was so pleased to discover this wasn't just another project for him but that he and the crew really believed in the faith behind this.

He made an excellent movie that relayed its message unapologetically but also entertained in the process. While the film used real police officers to help them recreate their daily life and the things they deal with, there were definitely some moments that I thought were pure fabrication for the sake of entertainment which is fine but they shouldn't hype it as being true to life policing when some very dangerous and silly techniques are used.

Regardless of your beliefs this is a film you and your family should see because there is a message here that anyone can take and make their own. Fathers especially should see this and take it to heart. It really was a great movie. This is definitely a religious movie that has a positive message. It's about a group of cops and one of them, Adam, has a daughter that is tragically killed.

It makes him realize he needs to be a better father to his other kid and get right with god. He gets his friends to get behind him and they make a pledge to do right. The quality of the film making is good considering it was such a low budget film. You really can't tell it was that low budget. There's no special effects just real people acting.

John6Daniels 9 July This movie was so corny, bad acting and simple. Yet i enjoyed this movie. Its a movie that does not contain mature violence, sex and superheroes therefore many people like you reading this will not like it for what it is. It's about annoying Christians talking about the jesus when ever they do something.

It has death, job, lying, grief and diversity. Sometimes you need a good corny movie to enjoy. In this film, faith changes the lives of four policemen who try to become role models for their children. It's one of the so-called "Christian movies", made by US evangelical Christians to propagandize their ideas. The central idea is that a good Christian should also be a modeling husband and father, but this applies to any husband and father, regardless of religion.

It's a matter of common sense rather than religion, although the doctrine of many religions points that direction. Thus, this film isn't likely to offend the religious sensibilities of most non-evangelical audiences, despite the discreet, but always present and boring, evangelical propaganda.

In fact, the film's worst is the insistence on biblical quotations, pastors and the whole evangelical environment, surely unpleasant to anyone who doesn't belong to this faction of Christianity. Most of the film is spent building the characters and their familiar environment but this turns it excessively warm, still and long.

There are some good action scenes but it's best not to watch it only for seeing that. What we have here, basically, is a good film with a moralizing background but that displeases by it's high religious charge. If it were cleaner or if it sought to cover other denominations that have the same mindset Catholics, Anglicans, Jews or Muslims etc.

Start being a MAN! When you give your time to you child, you can prove to yourself that you are a man. Being in law enforcement is a stressful job and it can drive a cop to drink. In "Courageous", it shows what it takes to be both a man and a father or dad.

You got a group of sheriff deputies in Georgia, who undergo the rigors of their jobs and their home lives. Other than dealing with criminals, they deal with the families as well. They is one case where an construction worker who was in dire needs of work help out a corporal with his shed. But thinking there was a mistake on the person he is helping, that work was a gift from God.

However, regrets came into his life when his youngest daughter dies in a car accident by a drunk driver. The handyman becomes the closest person to these lawmen. A young man makes the wrong choice by joining a gang, which he pays dearly. The bond was broken in which one of the lawmen went corrupt behind their backs. Another lawman has a daughter, and did nothing to support her or her mother.

A man must take action for his sins whether he's a law-abiding citizen, or a law-breaker. A real man makes atonement, a coward ignores the consequences.

What this movie is saying to "stand up, and man up! I recommend this movie straight up! I was expecting this to be better than it was, a lot better!! The acting was very poor, at some parts laughable. Then, the whole plot was sorta weak, I thought they could've and should've done more with the movie, if seemed short on the plot. It was very melodramatic, which i hate, some scenes seemed very cheesy and been there, done that.

I if feel like the filmmakers tryed, but they missed badly in my opinion. This movie did not move me, or make me feel good at all. The action scenes were actually pretty good, I'll give it that. And there was 1 plot twist In particular that I liked, no spoilers, I'll just let you find out yourself. But don't spend your money on this movie, cus I think there are much better films of higher quality to watch out there. A movie with a strong Christian message usually doesn't have strong acting and a good story.

This one does. Alex Kendrick is to be congratulated. Seraphion 23 September Sign up for THR news straight to your inbox every day. October 13, am. Related Stories. Related Story Courageous: Film Review. Surgeon General Response. All Rights reserved. Close the menu Logo text.
